Cream Puff Murder is the inaugural book in the A Seagrass Sweets Cozy Mystery by Sandi Scott. I love reading the works of “new to me” authors that are well written, with developed characters, clever, tightly woven plots, realistic situations and interesting settings. Patty, her friend and kitchen partner, originally met while working together at a restaurant in Paris. Patty specializes in French cuisine and owns the Southern Bird catering company. They work together to cater a luncheon at a private club. Ashley is asked to serve the dessert to the speaker's table first because of health concerns for Bobby McCay. The next morning McCay's trusted assistant, Colleen, is found dead in the ladies’ room. The Sheriff believes she was poisoned with by one of Ashley's cream puffs. Will Ashley find the real killer before her business is destroyed? The next morning McCay's trusted assistant, Colleen, is found dead in the ladies’ room. The Sheriff believes she was poisoned with by one of Ashley's cream puffs. Will Ashley find the real killer before her business is destroyed? Cream Puff Murder A Seagrass Sweets Cozy Mystery Book 1 edition by Sandi Scott Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is a fun, quick cozy mystery. It has something for everyone-delicious sounding food, a cute dog and small town charm. Aside from a few typos, the only major errors I spotted were occasional poor editing and abrupt transitions. The mystery was complicated enough that I never figured it out. I had no clue at all though Ashley was able to pick up on a big clue that she had overlooked. Dizzy plays a big role in uncovering evidence but in a distinctly natural doggie fashion. The one thing I didn't like was the "Localists" a semi-terrorist organization intent on keeping the town from changing. This to me is only a short step to an actual terrorist organization say in the Middle East and a few steps from KKK type behavior. This IS set in Texas so the whole idea of this organization made me uncomfortable. The only other thing this book needs is a few more recipes.
The characters are really good and unique. Ashley acts like a normal young woman beginning her career. She's passionate about baking and wants to use her talents to make people happy. She has insecurities from her past she has to overcome before she can be truly happy. She made bad decisions in the past but she can't be blamed for what happened. She did the right thing. I also liked how she has a loving brother (he's single, lives alone and cooks!) to talk to. I LOVE Ashley and Ryan together. They are so cute together! Ryan is a wonderful guy-aside from hacking exploits. He's sweet, caring and fun. It's obvious Ryan has feelings for Ashley and vice versa. What girl wouldn't want to be with Ryan? My favorite character is Dizzy, of course. She's a "Bitsa" dog - "bits of this, bits of that" like my "niece" Rupee. Dizzy has the silly, lovable nature of a Lab and the exuberance of a puppy. She could use a bit of training but seems like a real dog. I love how she was incorporated into the story and wasn't just there to give the heroine a pet.
I'm not so fond of the secondary characters. Patty, Ashley's business partner, is a bit snooty in a stereotypical French chef manner. Her no-nonsense attitude is a turn-off for me as a reader expecting quirky locals. She stands out though because she's not a local. Colleen sounds like she was tough to get along with but she didn't deserve to die for someone's selfish motives. Bobby could have been a business mogul of the Donald Trump sort but he seems like he is a nice man dedicated to making Sweetgrass the best place it can be for everyone-balancing traditional and modern. His daughter Hope seems a little cold, partly because Ashley barely bothered to keep in touch with her old friend and partly because of her wealth.
Sheriff Mueller is sweet on Ashley and she can't see it. That's what I think anyway. Far from wanting her to be guilty, he's hoping she's innocent but can't do anything to solve the case without resources. He gave off a country bumpkin sort of vibe. Ashley's waitstaff were hard to keep track of. They sound the same on paper though I think an audiobook narrator could make them shine. Emma Phee is the character people will love to hate. She's awful but complicated. Smoke Daddy Lee is the local BBQ king. I didn't like him much. He gives off a stereotypical cowboyish Texan vibe "Well hello there little lady" kind of thing and he may or may not be involved with the Localists. Ryan's friend Eddie is an idiot and a jerk. Ashley doesn't like him but I think Ryan sees a different side of Eddie most people don't see and vice versa. I could happily deal with Eddie moving out of town. Monty Gahn is the business tycoon of the Trumpian sort. I didn't like how his introduction into the story made it political. Naturally he must be a villain!
I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't really get into this book, but, there you have it I just didn't. It wasn't the writing, which was just fine; well-written, well-edited. It wasn't that the characters were in any way unlikeable or unrealistic, for neither category applies. But there you have it some books just don't appeal to particular people, and, for me, this was one of them. Perhaps it's that I've read too many "baker is suspected of poisoning victim" novels, so one more just didn't capture my interest as it might otherwise have done. Nevertheless, among the many offerings in the "sweets mystery" category, this book was definitely one of the better written, and the characters and plot were believable, so don't take my ennui as a sweeping judgment; by all means, give this novel a try.
Ashley Adams, the owner of French pastry Seagrass Sweets and her partner Patti, the owner of the French cuisine company The Southern Bird are catering the Gulf Coast Women's Club function, the next day (Colleen) one of the patrons body is discovered in the restroom, and the only thing she had eaten was one of Ashley's pastries. Which cause people to avoid her pastries at the next function.
Colleen had an argument with an unknown man at the function over emails, rumors of an affair with her boss, and rumors her boss is ill. Along with a community trying to keep their area free from land developers. Are any of these reason to want Colleen dead?
This is my first Sandi Scott story which I greatly enjoyed, and will be getting the next in the series. There is no violence, profanity or sexual innuendo in this story.
